The Tyrannosaurus Rex brings one of history’s most formidable predators to life as a mechanical DIY wooden automaton. Powered by a metal spring, this walking dinosaur model uses a reduction gear system to drive the legs and create smooth, lifelike movement. A clever arrangement of links and gears allows the dinosaur to walk upright on two feet, while a synchronised tail sway helps maintain balance, much like a real theropod.

Tyrannosaurs could grow up to 13 metres long and weigh as much as 9 tonnes. They had the largest teeth of any carnivorous dinosaur, capable of crushing bone as well as tearing flesh. Combined with excellent eyesight and an exceptional sense of smell, these traits made them apex predators of the late Cretaceous period. Their powerful rear legs and heavy balancing tails allowed them to travel efficiently across vast distances in search of prey.

This wind-up wooden automaton is designed as a scale model of a full-grown Tyrannosaurus Rex. The winding key is concealed within the top of the tail. To operate the model, remove the key and insert it into the ratchet mechanism on the dinosaur’s left side. Wind the spring mechanism several turns, place the model on a smooth, flat surface, switch it on and release. The Tyrannosaurus strides forward with moving jaws and a swaying tail, creating impressively realistic motion.

Rated “Advanced”, the model contains 249 parts and offers around 8 hours of assembly time. No glue or special tools are required. Step-by-step illustrated instructions guide the build, while proper sanding and lubrication help ensure smooth operation of the moving components.
